56 Squadron History

1927/1928 - China
In honour of the Sqn work on the Shanghi Defence Force, they were permitted the following Motto - A White Chinese Dragon on an RE Flag.

Jan 1947 .... 56 Field Company formed.
Jan 1947 - June 1947 .... Egypt, attached to 1 Armoured Division Engineers.

June 1947 - Oct 1947 .... Palestine as part of 1 Armoured Division Engineers.

Oct 1947 - Nov 1947 .... Kenya attached to HQ East African Engineers.

Nov 1947 - June 1949 .... Kenya attached to 34 Engineer Regiment.
June 1949 .... Regiment & Squadron Dis-banded.

Jan 1950 .... Re-formed as 56 Field Squadron after re-titling 34 Field Squadron.
Jan 1950 - May 1958 .... Hong Kong attached to 24 Field Engineer Regiment.

May 1958 - June 1958 .... Based in Barton Stacey.

June 1958 .... Re-titled 56 (MT) Squadron.
56 Field Squadron was reduced to a Cadre, amalgameted to 'B' Squadron - 4 Training Regiment.
June 1958 - June 1962 .... 4 Training Regiment.

June 1962 - July 1963 .... Based at Aldershot with 1 Training Regiment (absorbed MT of 55 Sqn)

July 1963 - Jan 1968 .... Based at Crookham with 1 Training Regiment.

Jan 1968 - July 1977 .... Based at Crookham with 3 Training Regiment.

July 1977 - Sept 1979 .... Based at Crookham with 1 Training Regiment.

Sept 1979 .... Based at Gib Bks, Camberley with 1 Training Regiment.

1st April 2008 .... Title transfered to 56 Commando Field Squadron.
Based at Chivenor with 24 Commando Engineer Regiment.
